WRKFORCE: Simple Change Makes Huge Differences in TRANSFER

In WRKFORCE, you can transfer menu to transfer Employee from Department to Department. The original Business Rule takes about about seven minutes to complete with is painful to users. Further more, after 80+ employees are transferred, one of the calculation script (CurPlnPr), used to take 1~2 minutes to complete, now shot up to an hour and twenty minutes. Let's take a look at the original Rule in Transfer - /* Description: Employee Transfer between Division & Department*/ /*STARTCOMPONENT:SCRIPT*/ SET LOCKBLOCK HIGH; SET AGGMISSG ON; SET CACHE HIGH; SET UPDATECALC OFF; /*ENDCOMPONENT*/ /*STARTCOMPONENT:SCRIPT*/ SET CREATENONMISSINGBLK ON; VAR yearTransfer = 0; VAR savedAction = 0; /*ENDCOMPONENT*/ FIX (/*DIM:Year*/{Years},/*DIM:Employee*/{Employees},/*DIM:Scenario*/{Scenario},/*DIM:Version*/{Version},/*DIM:Currency*/{Currency})   /*STARTCOMPONENT:SCRIPT*/   DATACOPY {FromDivision}->{FromDepartment} TO {ToDivision}->{ToDepartment}; "PrevCYTDTotalSalary" ( {T...

ESSBASE: When to Use FIX vs. IF

Hyperion developers love FIX and IF, both are powerful tools and interchangeable in usage in certain circumncetances. There are also differences between the two. Let's take a look. FIX...ENFIX Usages and Rules Every FIX must be ended with ENDFIX. But it is optional to end the statement by ";" FIX Mbr can be any comma-delimited list of members, or member set functions FIX Mbr argument can be a combination of members from multiple dimensions           FIX(@CHILDREN(Qtr1),"Actual")                 Calc Dim(Accounts);           ENDFIX FIX Mbr list from the same dimension means "OR", cross dimensions means "AND" FIX cannot be used inside of formulas in outline, they can ONLY be used in calc scripts Cannot consolidate a dimension that is FIXed on. Following will generate an erro...

FDM Mass Load Makes Life Easier for Mapping

Image
Everyone used FDM to update mapping probably will fee frustration when updating mappings, especially when many rows of records need to be added. More often than not, instead of giving you successful grid update confirmation, it throws you an error message, and all your hard working of mappings are lost in a second. After ran into those kind of errors for several times, people started to hit the Update Grid button every time making two or three entries. See error below. It is extremely painful when you have MANY mapping entries to make. Here is an easier way to do mass update of meta data mappings. - First you would need to export the mapping into an excel file. - Open the exported excel file, and insert rows, and ensure all newly added rows fall within the range of upstDataMap.                    - Delete all data in the DataK...

Essbase Tuning When There Are Share Members

Image
Using share member is a quite powerful capability in ESSBASE. It allows you to create unlimited alternative roll ups, and it takes zero storage. Whenever the base member changes (data, name, etc), the share member which it points to, changes too. You have freedom to use different alias for share members, but you can not change the member name.  One other reason developers like to use share members is that it is SAFE to delete. When the share members are deleted, it has no impact to the base members where the data are stored. More often than not, dynamic calc will be used for alternative rollups, with the intention that the overall aggregation time will not be increased by the addition of multiple alternative rollups. However, if we are not careful on writing the calc scripts, we could easily miss out the opportunity of improvement on calc time. Following is an example - In Department hierarchy, there are multiple alternative hierarchies, all are...

HFM: IC Configuration and Partner Code

Image
HFM is very powerful in dealing with InterCompany Transactions and elimination. (add more notes how HFM dealing with ICP) Our current General Ledger (GL) uses "hard coded" IC accounts. Ex. 1231 (IC receivable CA), 1232 (IC receivable BA), etc. Each receivable account plus entity will require an IC account! This is not only inefficient, but also hard to maintain in FDM mapping (see below). To correct this backward design of GL, NAV team added Partner Code as a new attribute / dimension of accounts, see below. This will appear in the very last column of GL extracts for HFM. Here are steps what need to be done to add new location and ICP mapping. Step1)  Add a new location After LOCALCURRICP is added, we need to ensure the entries in General and Workflow Behaviors are correct. This requires to create a new Import Format LOCALCURRICP Now we can copy the mappings from LOCALCURR to LOCALCURRICP. Make sure copy both Types of "Explicit"...

HFM: Cash Flow and CF Configuration

Image
There are two methods are commonly used for Cash Flow Calculation, 1) Cash Flow Configuration, which leaves the maintenance to the hands of functional users, vs. 2) Rules, which requires more of VB coding skills. Let's take a look at the method #1. Cash Flow Configuration, is to set 1, -1, at the intersection of BS accounts and Cash Flow accounts. Since the matrix can not be setup if BS and CF both are in the same dimension (such as account), it requires to replicate CF accounts and hierarchy in a secondary dimension, which is irrelevant to Cash Flow calculation, but only used for the matrix entries. Here we pick the Cell Site dimension. Followings are the steps to export CF configuration from one year to another. Step0) Please browse the config input forms under Admin/CF Config and see the combinations of the dimensions. Step1) Extract CF configuration into excel. From Extract/Data, select the followings members from each dimensions, and click Extract. Step2) Whe...

HFM/FDM: Steps by Steps Migration

Image
HFM migration steps - Step0) If the destination HFM app name exists already, delete it first. Step1) Check source (ex. HFM) and target (ex. PRODHFM) UDL files. They could reside in any HFM servers. Step2) From HFM server 161, run copy utility Step3) Ensure the source and destination UDL files are selected correctly Step4) Select source application, and confirm it will be converted to classic to ensure migration successful. We will need to convert back to EPMA. Click Yes and Yes. Step5) Select destination. define the application to copy to and click next  Copy in process Step6) After Copy is completed successfully, need to register HFM application, so it can be visible. Step7) After copy, user Admin is only assigned with provision access. We need assign administration to user Admin. Go to shared service, find Admin, and right click to select provision. you also can copy provision (select application under consolidation, right select Copy P...
